The sport gained popularity at the end of the 19th century. For the rules of play, there are three different swords used in the competition. They are Foil, Épée and Sabre. With each weapon comes their own different rules and strategies. All three weapons are represented at Olympic competition. The object of fencing is to score a point or touch by hitting your opponent’s target with your weapon before they get the scoring touch on you. With each weapon, there are different zones or target areas that register points.
